Sadako's Story

Ms.Poonam told us the story about Sadako, a young japanese girl who lived in a city called Hiroshima,Japan.Sadako was only two years old when America dropped two atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Nine years later, while Sadako was practicing for a race, she fainted and fell to the floor. Her parents were then told that thier young and active daughter was suffering from the "Atom Bomb "disease, resulting from the exposure to the radiations due to the nuclear bombs, and was going to die in a year's time.

Sadako's friend Kinji came to visit her often while Sadako lay in the hospital bed.Sadako thought all hope was lost and told her friend that she was scared of dying, and wanted to live a normal life.Kinji told her of an old Japanese legend which said that if a sick person folded a thousand paper cranes, the Gods would make him/her healthy again.

So,Sadako set off to work making a thousand paper cranes and when she died a year later at the age of twelve, she had made over a thousand paper cranes. Her friends and classmates decided to make a statue dedicated to thier close freind, Sadako.

Now,Citizens of Hiroshima fold paper cranes and put it inside Sadako's statue.I was really moved by the way Sadako never gave up and continued to fight till the end.
